Using the DIVA-D

The DIVA-D can verify functionality of DIFI devices and systems.

Example Uses
  • Test DIFI Modems
  • Test DIFI IF Converters
  • Test DIFI Combiner-Divider devices
  • Test multiple devices and streams in the field or in a manufacturing environment

DIVA Testing of Terminal Components

DIVA-D can test the DIFI-capable devices in a terminal.

In this example terminal configuration, the digital modem and IF converter are DIFI-capable.

Digital Modem Testing

Testing Modem Tx Functionality

DIVA-D receives the modem’s DIFI Tx streams and displays packet statistics. Moreover, through digital processing techniques, DIVA-D can demodulate the associated signal and display signal characteristics, such as the power spectrum and I/Q constellation.

Testing Modem Rx Functionality

DIVA-D generates and transmits DIFI streams to the Rx port of the modem. A user configures the waveforms represented by the data packets and sets the fields of the context packets.

Loopback Testing of Modem

DIVA-D receives the modem’s DIFI Tx streams and then changes the Stream ID to send the packet stream back to the modem. If desired, channel simulation effects may be applied before the stream is sent to the modem’s Rx port. Effects include additional noise, Doppler shifting, varying attenuation, and periodic loss of packets.

IF Converter Testing

Testing IFC A/D Functionality

To test the Analog-to-Digital function of an IF converter, an analog waveform generator sends a known analog signal into the IFC, and the IFC sends the associated DIFI stream to the DIVA-D. DIVA-D receives the DIFI stream and displays packet statistics, as well as signal characteristics, such as the power spectrum, I/Q constellation, and phase noise.

Testing IFC D/A Functionality

To test the Digital-to-Analog function of an IF Converter, DIVA-D generates and transmits a DIFI stream to the digital input of the IFC, and an analog signal analyzer receives the resulting analog waveform for analysis. A user configures the waveforms represented by the data packets, and the signal analyzer helps verify the generated signal.

Testing Both A/D and D/A Functionality of IFC

Both the A/D and D/A functions of the IFC may be tested simulatenously by using the DIVA-D to loop back Digital IF data. An analog waveform generator sends a known signal into the IFC, the DIVA-D receives the stream and then changes the Stream ID to send the packet stream back to the IFC, which in turn creates an analog signal that is sent to an analog signal analyzer. If desired, channel simulation effects may be applied before the stream is sent to the IFC. Effects include additional noise, Doppler shifting, varying attenuation, and periodic loss of packets.

DIVA-D Multi-Stream Handling

Whether connected to a multi-modem and/or multi-antenna environment, or configured for manufacturing tests of a large volume of DIFI devices, DIVA-D can receive/transmit multiples streams among several devices, as well as apply channel simulation effects on the streams.

Testing Multiple Devices via a Switch

With all DIFI devices connected to a switch, the DIVA can communicate with each individually based on Stream ID’s and Source/Destination Addresses (see DIFI specification for details).

The DIVA can selectively monitor and analyze certain streams based on Stream ID. DIVA can also be configured to transmit different streams with different waveforms to any combination of destination devices. Moreover, channel simulation effects may be applied on selected streams.

Testing Setups Containing a Combiner/Divider (CD)

A DIFI Combiner-Divider (CD) performs two functions. In one direction, the CD combines multiple DIFI stream channels into one. In the other direction, the CD divides the incoming DIFI stream channel into multiple channels.

The DIVA can perform unit testing of a CD. If a system architecture includes a CD, the DIVA can utilize the CD’s functions to test the DIFI streams being distributed throughout the network.
